Selling Online
Writing Product Descriptions That Convert
Good product descriptions turn browsers into buyers. How to write descriptions that sell for your Philippine online store. A guide from GBGCoders.
Great photos get attention, but the words seal the deal. A weak product description — or worse, none at all — leaves buyers unsure, and unsure shoppers do not buy. A good one answers their questions and gives them the confidence to click "add to cart."
Here is how to write descriptions that convert:
- Lead with the benefit, not just the feature. Do not only say what it is; say what it does for the buyer. "Waterproof" is a feature; "stays dry even in a sudden Manila downpour" is a benefit they feel.
- Cover the practical details. Size, materials, colors, what is included, care instructions. Missing details create doubt, and doubt stops sales — especially when buying sight unseen.
- Write for a real person. Use natural, friendly language, not stiff specs alone. Imagine answering a customer asking "what's this like?"
- Be specific and honest. Real, concrete details build trust; exaggeration leads to returns and bad reviews.
- Keep it scannable. Short paragraphs plus a few bullet points for key specs. Shoppers skim, so make the important parts easy to catch.
- Anticipate questions. If customers always ask the same thing, answer it in the description before they have to message you.
- Add a gentle nudge. A line about limited stock, fast shipping, or a guarantee can tip a hesitant buyer over the line — as long as it is true.
For Philippine stores, a warm, conversational tone — even light Taglish where it suits your brand — often connects better than rigid formal English. Match the voice to your customers.
Avoid two extremes: a one-line description that says almost nothing, and a giant wall of text no one reads. Aim for enough to inform and reassure, organized so it is easy to skim.
A bonus: good descriptions also help SEO. Including the words customers actually search for helps your products show up on Google and within your store's search.
Think of each description as a tiny sales pitch. The product photo stops the scroll; the description closes the sale by removing every reason to hesitate.
