Red Flags When Hiring a Web Developer
Hiring a web developer in the Philippines? The warning signs to watch for so you do not get burned. An honest guide from GBGCoders.
Hiring the wrong web developer can cost you money, time, and a lot of stress — and unfortunately the industry has its share of unreliable players. Knowing the warning signs helps you avoid a bad experience and choose someone you can trust.
Red flags to watch for:
- No portfolio or examples. A legitimate developer can show you previous work. If they cannot, or are vague about it, be cautious.
- Prices that seem too good to be true. A suspiciously cheap "complete website" often means a generic template, no proper hosting or support, or corners cut you will pay for later.
- Guarantees of instant results. "Page-one on Google in a week" or similar promises are not realistic. Overpromising is a sign of either inexperience or dishonesty.
- Vague terms and no written agreement. If they will not put the scope, price, timeline, and what is included in writing, that is a serious warning.
- Poor or slow communication before you have even hired them. If they are hard to reach now, it usually gets worse once they have your downpayment.
- Demanding full payment upfront with no track record. Some downpayment is normal; 100% upfront from an unproven provider is risky.
- No mention of ownership. If it is unclear whether you will own your domain, hosting, and files, you could end up locked in or held hostage.
- No support after launch. A developer who disappears the moment the site is live leaves you stranded when something breaks.
- Only one way to contact them, or an anonymous presence. Legitimate providers are reachable and identifiable.
Green flags, by contrast: a real portfolio, clear written quotes, honest answers (including telling you what you do not need), reasonable payment terms, good communication, and a commitment to ownership and support.
How to protect yourself:
- Check their work and, if possible, talk to past clients or read reviews.
- Get everything in writing before paying.
- Ask directly: "Will I own my domain, hosting, and files? What support do I get after launch?"
- Trust your gut on communication — how they treat you before the sale predicts how they will treat you after.
A good web partner is not just skilled; they are honest, communicative, and accountable. Those qualities matter as much as technical ability.
At GBGCoders, we lead with what avoids these red flags — a real portfolio, written quotes, honest advice, fair terms, true ownership, and support after launch. Want a partner you can trust? Try our calculator, see our packages, or message us for a free consultation.
